SUNSET HILLS, MO (KTVI)? New communications towers meant to improve the St. Louis area?s emergency communications system are not sitting well with some residents.
Three years ago voters in three counties, St. Louis, St. Charles and Jefferson, approved a sales tax increase to help fund an upgrade in the area?s emergency communications network.
The $120 million will eliminate dead spots in radio coverage for first responders.
But the upgrades include erecting 35 new towers and it?s where they are being placed that has some residents unhappy.
Sunset Hills residents just learned that one of the towers will go up next to the South County Health Center on South Lindbergh. The clinic backs up against many homes.
The city?s planning and zoning commission has already voted to not recommend approval of this plan, but the county will likely have the final say.
Residents say some of the homes affected are 80 to 90 year old brick homes.
Residents aren?t against the 190 foot tower they would just like to see it go up at a more commercial location.
St. Louis County says it chose the property because it owns the property. In addition to the tower there will also be a backup generator at the site.
There will be a second public hearing on the issue Wednesday night in Sunset Hills. County officials will also be at tonight?s hearing to present their case.
