Indigo is a cloud-based, cross-platform personal assistant for Android and Windows Phone 8 (hands-on)

The idea of a personal assistant needs no introduction: you already know Siri, and those of you fortunate to own a Jelly Bean handset (or at least a hacked ICS one) have the privilege of using Google Now. So there's very little we haven't seen here. And yet, we were inclined to take a look at Indigo, a new personal assistant for Android and Windows Phone 8 that launched yesterday, and will be available as a free download in the coming weeks. Meet us past the break to find out why.

Monster goldfish found in Lake Tahoe could destroy lake's ecosystem

Monster goldfish found:?Scientists are worried that an increasing number of monster goldfish found in Lake Tahoe are stimulating algae growth.

By Associated Press / February 22, 2013

Gigantic goldfish, like this one held by University of Nevada, Reno, researcher Christine Ngai, have been found in the waters of Lake Tahoe.

Biologists with the University of Nevada, Reno say they're finding a growing number of giant goldfish in the lake.

While officials have been working for years in trying to keep the lake's water crystal clear, researcher Sudeep Chandra told KCRA-TV (http://bit.ly/Yo0lIn?) the discovery of the goldfish is particularly worrisome because goldfish eat a lot and excrete "lots of nutrients."

Those nutrients stimulate algae growth.

The goldfish, some of which have grown to 18 inches, could also eat smaller fish, creating new competition for native trout.

Chandra says with no prior studies on goldfish for guidance, researchers are catching the giant goldfish and bringing them back to their lab to study.

It's not clear how the goldfish got into Lake Tahoe, but it's believed to be from people dumping aquariums into the lake.

Russia, Arab League see chance for start to Syria dialogue

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia and the Arab League see signs of hope that the rival sides in the Syrian civil war are willing to start talks to end nearly two years of conflict.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and visiting Arab League head Nabil Elaraby said on Wednesday they were encouraged that both the Syrian government and the opposition had voiced readiness for dialogue.

"There have been signs of a positive tendency to start dialogue and both the government representatives and the opposition have begun speaking about this," Lavrov told a joint news conference with Elaraby.

"For now both sides still come up with preconditions but, according to our common view, once there is the key common readiness to start dialogue, then agreeing parameters for this process is just a matter of diplomatic art," he said.

Russia, a long-standing ally of President Bashar al-Assad and Syria's main arms supplier, has vetoed three U.N. Security Council resolutions that would out pressure on the Syrian government to cease violence in which some 70,000 people have been killed.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem is due in Moscow next Monday and Lavrov said the head of the Syrian Opposition Coalition, Moaz Alkhatib, would likely visit in March.

Alkhatib has said he is willing to negotiate with a deputy of Assad but the aim of such talks would be to find a way to allow the president safe passage into exile and set up a transitional government.

"We welcome the initiative by...Alkhatib who proposed to start a dialogue with the government and I think we will be able to reach this goal," Elaraby said after talks that also included foreign ministers from Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon and Egypt.

The Cairo-based Arab League in November welcomed the creation of the Syrian National Coalition, but stopped short of giving it full recognition as the representative of the Syrian people.

"Russia has very good relations with the government in Damascus and we hope it will use that to convince them that this conflict can only be solved in a peaceful way," Elaraby added.

Russia, accused by the West and some Arab states of shielding Assad in the conflict, says calls for his departure should not be a precondition for peace talks and that Syrians should decide their own fate without foreign interference.

"It is very important that opposition leaders' readiness for dialogue is met with confirmation by the government that they are ready for dialogue too," Lavrov said.

"Now it's time for words to be confirmed by deeds."

In the course of the conflict, which started as a clampdown on street protests against the rule of Assad in March, 2011, before descending into civil war, the Arab League has also called on Moscow to halt arms sales to Damascus.

But Russia's export agency said earlier in February it would continue delivering weapons to the government army.

A Final Word on the Telsa Test Drive Mess

Yesterday, New York Times public editor Margaret Sullivan posted her findings on the ongoing spat between Times writer John Broder and Tesla CEO Elon Musk over a now infamous test drive of the Tesla Model S. (In case you missed it: Broder attempted to drive the EV from D.C. to Milford, Conn., using only Tesla's network of Supercharger stations. It died on the way back. Musk called the test "fake" on Twitter, then wrote a blog post with trip data to support his claims.)

While Sullivan acknowledges the discrepancies between Broder's account and Tesla's data, namely cruise control speeds and climate control settings, she takes issue with Broder's decision-making along the way. "Decisions he made at a crucial juncture?when he recharged the Model S in Norwich, Conn., a stop forced by the unexpected loss of charge overnight?were certainly instrumental in this saga?s high-drama ending," she writes. Yet while Sullivan found Broder's reporting to be sloppy, she is "convinced that he took on the test drive in good faith, and told the story as he experienced it."

Before Sullivan published her findings on Monday, Broder released his own point-by-point response to Tesla's data-driven blog post. Broder said that his alleged attempt to kill the Model S by driving in circles at the Milford rest station was merely him trying to find the charger. More importantly, he says, after he charged to 28 percent the next morning, Tesla cleared him to leave before the leg of the trip in which the car ultimately ran out of power. Musk later argued that Broder did the opposite, and failed to listen to Tesla personnel.

Over the weekend, journalists and even Model S owners recreated Broder's trip, driving from D.C. to Boston at the behest of Tesla. CNN finished the road trip from D.C. to Boston with no complications. The group of Model S owners made it, too, though Tesla had to "push multiple versions of beta software onto one owner's car multiple times?after calling Tesla's support line and working in close tandem with a software developer?to get it to fully charge. As Sullivan points out, however, these subsequent tests drove through much milder temperatures, a factor which can affect the range estimates of the Model S heavily.

Although she doesn't get into specific examples herself?"I don't think that's useful here"?Sullivan acknowledges that both sides will go on debating and concludes that "there is still plenty to argue about and few conclusions that are unassailable."

There's no clear "winner" in this debacle. Broder might have been sloppy in his reporting?at least when comported to the incredible accuracy of Tesla's on-board data recorders?and it opened him up to criticism. Meanwhile, Tesla might have overplayed its hand when it asserted there was actual malice on the part of the Times. The reality of driving the Model S seems to fall in the middle of the two sides' takes: You can cruise up and down the east coast in a Tesla, but you've got to be on guard and watching the car's range constantly?it isn't as comfortably mindless as a road trip in an average car.

Asian shares hit 18-month high on growth hopes

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares scaled their highest levels since August 2011 on Wednesday after an improving global economic outlook whetted investor appetite for risk, while the yen firmed amid doubts over Japan's commitment to drastic reflation.

Asian shares have been on an uptrend as risks from the euro zone debt crisis and the U.S. fiscal impasse abated and signs of recovery emerged in major economies including China. Corporate earnings have also been generally positive.

"The tide continued to push higher for equity markets across Asia today, with solid leads from Europe and the U.S. enough to keep traders in a buying frame of mind," said Tim Waterer, senior trader at CMC Markets.

News of new possible mergers boosted U.S. stocks on Tuesday, pinning the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> near a five-year high, while European shares rose after the German ZEW investor sentiment index rose to a three-year high.

European markets will likely consolidate, with financial spreadbetters predicting London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> would open down 0.1 percent. U.S. stock futures were flat to suggest a subdued start for Wall Street. <.l><.eu><.n/>

The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> added 0.8 percent, up for a third day in a row, led by a 1.9 percent gain in its technology sector <.miapjit00pus>. The index has risen 4.3 percent year to date.

South Korean shares <.ks11> outperformed their peers with a 1.8 percent jump to a one-month high, as foreigners stepped up buying and a pause in the yen's falling trend soothed sentiment.

Australian shares <.axjo> rose 0.3 percent, extending their bull run at 4-1/2-year highs on improving sentiment overseas and a better-than-expected domestic earnings season. The Australian market has risen nearly 10 percent this year.

Positive growth in Southeast Asia has drawn foreign investors, keeping regional stocks robust. The Philippines stock market <.psi> extended gains to a record high while Bangkok's SET index <.seti> hit a fresh 18-year high.

Rallying stocks weighed on assets perceived as safe-haven, with spot gold inching up 0.2 percent to $1,606.84 an ounce but stuck near a six-month low.

Asian credit markets took their cues from stocks, tightening the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index by two basis points.

London copper edged up 0.2 percent to $8,067.75 a metric ton, off Tuesday's three-week lows.

"A shift to cyclicals from defensives has come full circle and investors are now looking at sector-specific factors within an asset class, selecting those with a tight supply/demand outlook," said Naohiro Niimura, a partner at research and consulting firm Market Risk Advisory.

He said industrial metals and oil are favored by investors. Within base metals, copper will likely rise further as economic activity increases, as will Brent crude oil, while U.S. crude was seen weighed by ample supply.

U.S. crude steadied around $96.72 a barrel but Brent eased 0.2 percent to $117.31.

Platinum and palladium also have further upside scope due to supply concerns.

The rise in equities weighed on assets perceived as safe-haven, such U.S. Treasuries and gold on Tuesday. Spot gold inched up 0.2 percent to $1,607.94 an ounce, but hovered near a six-month low hit the day before.

YEN INSTABILITY RISES

Tokyo's Nikkei stock average <.n225> closed 0.8 percent higher at its highest close since late September 2008. <.t/>

The yen remained jittery, swinging in narrow ranges on concerns Japan may not be able to pursue as strong a reflationary policy mix as previously perceived.

The government delayed nominating a new Bank of Japan governor, fuelling talk of friction between the prime minister and the finance minister over who is best suited to implement the bold steps needed to reignite the economy.

The G20 meeting last weekend gave tacit approval to a weak currency as long as it was as a result of domestic monetary easing, but maintained its traditional opposition to currency manipulation aimed at fostering exports and growth of one country at others' expense.

"In light of the G20 statement to avoid competitive devaluation, it will be difficult to talk down the yen specifically. I think the onus now is on policy to do the work," said Sim Moh Siong, FX strategist for Bank of Singapore.

The dollar fell 0.4 percent to 93.15 yen, off its highest since May 2010 of 94.465 hit on February 11. The euro eased 0.3 percent to 124.91 yen. It touched a peak since April 2010 of 127.71 yen on February 6.

Japan logged its biggest monthly trade deficit on record in January, underscoring the country's deteriorating trade balances and accenting the yen's weak fundamental trend.

Sterling was under pressure on growing speculation the UK could soon lose its prized triple-A credit rating. Sterling traded at $1.5444, having plumbed a seven-month low at $1.5414 in New York.

Investors remained wary of possible U.S. federal spending cuts and outcome of the upcoming Italian election. They also awaited the release later in the session of the minutes of the Federal Reserve's January policy meeting for clues to its future bond-buying plans.

The ZEW report was a positive sign ahead of the more important euro zone flash PMIs on Thursday and Germany's IFO business sentiment on Friday, said Vassili Serebriakov, a strategist at BNP Paribas.

The euro extended its gains, rising 0.2 percent to $1.3413.

Microsoft's one-PC limit isn't new in Office 2013

Microsoft is busy changing to a devices and services company. One of those changes is making the Office 365 subscriptions to the desktop Office 2013 software a better deal than buying a perpetual licence in a cardboard box (which, unless you're in a developing country with notoriously poor connectivity, contains only a product key card with a code on).

There's been a lot of discussion of the limitation that the retail (consumer rather than business) versions of Office 2013 can only be installed on one PC ? not one at a time, but only one PC. If it crashes, you can reinstall Office ? on that same computer. If the PC fails, you can't transfer the licence. A stringent new restriction pushing users to the Office 365 service, most commentators have suggested. ZDNet colleague Ed Bott takes a more thoughtful look at Microsoft's changing business model.

But as it happens, this limitation isn't new. "The Office 2013 software is licensed to one computer for the life of that computer and is non-transferable," a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed. But they also pointed out that "Office 2013 has the same licensing provisions around transferability as the equivalent Office 2010 package, which was the package purchased by most Office 2010 customers."

That was the key card version of Office 2010 Home and Student, and it could only be installed on one computer. The Software Licence Terms make this quite clear:

2. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS.

a. One Copy per Device. The software license is permanently assigned to the device on which the software is initially activated. That device is the "licensed device."

The question came up on?Microsoft's community support site back in 2010 and the answer was clear; the key card version of Office 2010 Home and Student can only be used on the first PC you install it on.

Why the fuss now and not then? Probably because not many people noticed the restriction; who actually reads the licence? Plus, this time, there's the suspicion that Microsoft is pushing people to a more expensive way of buying Office. Certainly getting Office users to pay for the software every year would bring in plenty of money. If all billion Office users took the $99 annual Office 365 Home and Premium subscription, that would bring in almost $25 billion a quarter; putting them all on a $20 a month E3 plan would bring in twice as much revenue as Apple from the Office division alone.

The thing is, there have always been more expensive ways of buying Office that give you more rights, as well as more features than the cheapest option. With Office 2010, you could buy a retail version with the software on DVD and run it on a desktop and notebook at the same time, as well as transferring it to a new PC every 90 days. More people bought the key card version ? not because they didn't care about moving it to a new PC, but because it was cheaper.

With Office 2013, you can buy the Office 365 Home Premium subscription and share Office with four other members of your family (or use it on four other PCs). In fact, you can stream Office onto a PC in a matter of minutes (even on a slow internet connection) and remotely deactivate it without going back to that PC, and do the same on the next PC you need to use. This means you can effectively use it on an unlimited numbers of PCs. You also get Skype minutes and extra SkyDrive storage, and a new version of Office whenever it comes out to sweeten the deal.

But, as has been the case for the last three years, if you want the very cheapest version of Office, you can't keep using it for year after year ? unless you have an unusually long-lived PC.

It's a trade-off you have to make, and it may well cost Microsoft some sales from users refusing to upgrade from Office 2007 or earlier because of the limitation. It's just not actually a new trade-off.

?

Update:

I had several questions about running Office in a VM to avoid the transferability limitation. This would certainly break the spirit of the licence and the information about activation in the SLT for the keycard version of Office 2010 suggests it may not work any way.

4. MANDATORY ACTIVATION. Activation associates the use of the software with a specific device. During activation, the software will send information about the software and the device to Microsoft. This information includes the version, the license version, language and product key of the software, the Internet protocol address of the device, and information derived from the hardware configuration of the device.

(If you're looking at the SLT, make sure to read section 3, the key card licence, rather than section 1, which is the full retail product licence, or section 2 for OEM versions of Office 2010.)

Study: In vitro fertilization does not increase risk of breast cancer

By Arturo Garcia
Saturday, February 16, 2013 20:37 EST

?

A new study has found that in-vitro fertilization (IVF) does not increase a woman?s risk of contracting breast or endometrial cancer.

According to Reuters, researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) examined the medical records of 67,608 Israeli women who received IVF treatments between 1994 and 2011 and compared them with 19,795 women who never underwent the treatments, which can involve puncturing the ovary to collect eggs, or stimulating ovulation with medication.

The study, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, found that after running the women?s records through a national cancer registry, just over 1,500 of them had been diagnosed with cancer as of mid-2011, but that IVF treatments were not a significant factor in their chances of contracting the disease.

?The findings were fairly reassuring,? said Louise Brinton, the study?s lead author. ?Nothing was significantly elevated.?

However, Brinton said, her team did find a woman?s chances of contracting ovarian cancer increased slightly the more rounds of IVF treatment she received; that scenario occurred in 45 cases out of the entire study.
